The genealogy takes a left turn right at the end. It has been leading down to Joseph, but then points out Jesus isn't actually the son of Joseph. Rather, Joseph is the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus. This has been a legal genealogy, not a biological one. But the key is, when the genealogy points out Jesus is the adoptive son of Joseph and not his biological son, it reminds us of a very important point. Jesus's father is the Holy Spirit. Jesus isn't the son of Joseph, He's the son of Mary (which we don't mean as a title like the Muslims). This reminds us that Jesus is not merely the son of David, the son of Abraham, the son of Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth, He is the son of God.
